Story of the Signature

Guanyin crosses all living beings

Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Mercy, is said to have fathered King Miaoshuang of the Xinglin Kingdom, mothered Queen Bao De, sistered Miaoyin and Miaoyuan, and Guanyin was the third daughter named Miaoshan, who descended from the Venerable Cihang, and could not bear to see all sentient beings being sent into the cycle of the six paths of rebirth, and so she took great pains to save the world's sufferings and transcend the living beings, and cultivated the fruit of her work on Mount Pulu-Tuo Luo-Jia of the South China Sea. He was awarded the title of "Bodhisattva of Great Compassion and Great Suffering".

The Thousand Hands, Thousand Eyes, Great Compassion Dharani Sutra says, "Guanyin, the incredible power of God, has already been a Buddha in the immeasurable kalpa of the past, and is now a Bodhisattva, with the name of Dharma-mind Rulai, and the power of great compassion, and the happiness of all beings.

Guanyin is a bodhisattva, but he became a buddha, called "Dharma-mind Ruler," an infinite number of kalpas ago, and because he felt that all beings were trapped in the sea of ignorance and suffering and in the cycle of the six paths of rebirth, he held a compassionate wish, and sailed in the opposite direction of compassion and manifested his bodhisattva appearance to alleviate the sufferings of the world.

The Sadhana Sutra records the words of Guanyin's vow: "When I am on the path of the Bodhisattva, if there are any beings who are suffering from all kinds of pains and horrors, who are sad and lonely, who are hard to be rescued, and who are unable to get rid of their sufferings, and who recite me in their hearts and call me by my name, and who can get rid of their sufferings no matter where they are, and who hear me with their ears in heaven, and who look at me with their eyes in heaven, then even if one of them is unable to get rid of their sufferings, then I will never become a Buddhist monk.
